Traffic Building

Traffic Building is standout architecture for its elaborate brown brick and terra cotta facade. The six-story loft building on Chelsea’s West 23rd Street was designed for the now-defunct Traffic Cafeteria. A diner has taken its place.

According to the Daytonian in Manhattan blog, the ground floor brick and terra cotta has been replaced with stone tiles, but the top five floors – except for modern windows – have kept their original design.

Manhasset Apartments

Manhasset Apartments are near-twin Beaux Arts landmark buildings on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, instantly recognizable for their two-story slate mansard roof and imposing orange brick form.

The buildings were originally designed by architect Joseph Wolf as eight-story structures – then the legal limit for apartments. When the original developer went bankrupt, the new developer hired Janes & Leo to add three stories, taking advantage of new building codes. In the process, Janes & Leo changed the decorative style to Beaux Arts.

In 1910, a new set of owners added retail stores along Broadway.

The building’s current owners rebuilt the roof starting in late 1996; while the scaffolding was still up in March of ’99, an absent-minded restaurant chef set the building on fire.

Aramco Building

Aramco Building reminds one, with its brick, curved corner, and strip windows, of the Starrett-Lehigh Building in West Chelsea. It served as headquarters of the Arabian American Oil Company (Aramco) from 1949 to 1973.

According to a New York Times article, the Aramco Building was designed with a view to possible future conversion to residential use. In 1987 the building was updated by Der Scutt, the architect responsible for the Trump Building, Grand Hyatt, and 100 United Nations Plaza Tower, among others. In the renovation, Der Scutt created a two-story lobby and modern two-story base clad in polished brass, tinted glass and marble.
